A Day in the Life: Matt McGrath, Base Swing Driver
Q1: Can you tell us what a typical week looks like for you as a Base Swing Driver?
Each week is different, but generally, I carry out all the daily tasks needed on base and am always available to move any of the trailers around the studio at short notice. We often have regular moves and setups, and on shoot days, I’m on hand for any support the crew might need, so flexibility is key.
Q2: You’ve taken part in our Drivers Academy Programme — what motivated you to get involved?
I wanted to get involved because I really enjoy my job and love driving, and it’s a consistent area of work within this industry. The Academy has been an amazing opportunity that ADF offers its employees to grow their skills and keep contributing to different parts of the business.
Q3: What’s been the biggest takeaway or skill you’ve gained from the Drivers Academy so far?
As I’m still relatively new to driving HGVs, the Academy has been the perfect stepping stone. It’s given me a great place to practise and learn how to handle all the different trailers we have – and within ADF, there’s a huge fleet with many variations in the size of our trailers. I’ve also been lucky to learn from experienced team members who are always there to give advice and help me out when needed.
Q4: How has the Academy changed the way you approach your role?
The Academy has given me a different understanding of how everything comes together. I understand the whole process of base and moves better, and I’m able to bring more to the team in my day-to-day work.
Q5: What do you love most about your job at ADF?
What I love most is that no two days are the same, and I get to work in such a dynamic environment. I also really enjoy meeting different people and travelling to new bases, there’s always something new to see and learn.
Q6: How do you think the industry has changed since you started working in it?
I’ve noticed there’s a much stronger focus on sustainability now, from reducing food waste to using cleaner generators. It’s great to see these changes happening and to be able to do my bit in supporting this change.
Q7: Do you have a favourite memory or standout production you’ve supported?
My favourite so far has been working on Gangs of London. The crew and cast were amazing, and it was a fantastic experience. It’s also great to look back at all the different locations we’ve filmed at and to remember being there – knowing exactly where those scenes were created.
