Facilities by ADF team up with Screen Alliance Wales

Facilities by ADF are proud to be official sponsors of Screen Alliance Wales, a not-for-profit organisation that recognises the global potential of the film and TV industry in Wales.

Allison Dowzell from Screen Alliance Wales says, ‘We’re absolutely delighted to welcome Facilities by ADF to our family of local supporters.  Their dedication to providing an excellent service from Wales and commitment to training makes them a perfect fit for Screen Alliance Wales’

We are looking forward to building our relationship with Screen Alliance Wales.  Marsden Proctor, MD says, ‘Working alongside an organisation, such as SAW, which holds important values such as educating, inspiring and nurturing the next generation of young people and their talent high on their agenda, also helps us develop further as a company. Not only are we introduced to these young creatives looking to make their stamp on the industry, but for future high-end productions looking to film in Wales, it provides an incredible platform for their production to build on’.

Recently ADF were delighted to host Alistair Aston, a senior lecturer at Coleg Y Cymoedd, as part of a 4-day support package run by Screen Alliance Wales. Alistair got an insight into how a busy facilities company works, had a tour of the buildings and workshop, observed our planning processes and visited one of our local productions.

“Just want to say thanks again to all the staff at ADF, especially Kate for taking the time out to give such a good insight into your company and its role within the film and TV industry” Alistair Aston, Senior Lecturer, Coleg Y Cymoedd.

Compliance News

There has recently been confusion amongst some of our clients, with regards to productions hiring in vehicles directly from hire companies and being unaware that they may be doing so illegally without an Operator’s Licence. To try and better understand the requirements Facilities By ADF have put together the below as we would not like to see any of our clients to unwillingly operate against compliance legislation and facing prosecution.

Do I Need an Operator’s License?

You need an operator’s licence to operate vehicles above 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight (GVW) that are used to carry goods (i.e. anything not permanently attached to the vehicle) on public roads for trade or business purposes. This includes short-term rental vehicles hired for as little as one day. Operator Licence Awareness Training will help you understand all the regulations involved and how to implement them directly on a day-to-day basis.

The operator’s licence must be held by the person – whether an individual or a company – who ‘uses’ the vehicle and this may or may not be the owner of the vehicle.

The user of the vehicle can be:

  • The driver, if they own it or if they are leasing, buying on hire purchase terms, hiring or borrowing the vehicle (e.g. a typical owner-driver operation)
  • The person whose servant or agent the driver is – i.e. whoever employs or controls the driver
  • This covers both ‘own account’ and ‘hire or reward’ operations.

Additionally, under operator’s licence legislation all holders of standard National Operator Licences must be professionally competent or employ someone who is professionally competent. The most popular method of demonstrating this is to hold a National Certificate of Professional Competence.

Further information and clarification can be found at the following:

Facilities By ADF is committed to compliance and we’re more than happy to help and assist our customers in this complex area. If you require any further information or have any questions then please feel free to contact one of our Transport Managers below:

Investment in the ADF Fleet

In an effort to meet the constant demand for high-end premium equipment, we’ve continued to make considerable investment in new vehicles. We’ve added three whole units (circa 100 + vehicles) to our fleet that will now give ADF the capacity to service 20 large productions at any one time.

Last year, we introduced to our fleet the following Trailers: 3 x Black Diamond Artic Costume, 3 x Black Diamond Make-up units, 2 x Black Diamond Production Offices, 15 x Black Diamond American 3-ways, 15 x Black Diamond American 2-ways & 2 x Black Diamond Single Artists along with 14 x Tech Trucks (Euro 6).

Even after this significant investment in luxury vehicles, we are still unable to satisfy the demand; in an endeavour to fill the void we are going to replicate our order of new equipment this year.

Facilities by ADF in Demand: Bookings for 2020 Being Taken

Yet again, it’s been an incredibly busy year for ADF, with hardly any time to come up for air! Indications are that 2020 will start and continue in the same vain.

This year, in an effort to try and meet the constant demand for high-end, premium equipment we’ve made a considerable investment in new vehicles. We’ve added three whole units (circa 100 + vehicles) to our fleet that will now give ADF the capacity to service 17 large productions at any one time.

Even after adding this number of vehicles to the fleet we are still unable to satisfy the insatiable demand, and regrettably, have had to turn a considerable amount of work away. Being unable to service our client’s requirements really hurts – so in an endeavour to fill the void, we are going to replicate our order of new equipment in 2020.

The industry has seen a huge change in terms of securing supplier’s availability over the last two years. This has been seen even more recently with Disney & Netflix taking long term leases on studio space at Pinewood & Shepperton respectively. The majority of our bookings now come from Heads of Production and Production Executives who book their production slot at the beginning of the year in order to secure availability. The industry has evolved to such an extent that by July 2019, ADF more or less filled it’s order book for 2019 and started taking bookings for the first quarter of 2020.

With this in mind, if you have a project that is due to begin production early next year requiring our services then please make contact sooner rather than later to secure availability.
